Wash in Cold Water (Clothes & Hands)

Most people know by now that washing clothes in cold water gets the job done as well as washing in warm or hot water (for most purposes) and saves energy. Thus, the preponderance of laundry detergents formulated for "cold cycles" in the consumer marketplace.

But many people are still laboring under the assumption that washing their hands requires water "as hot as one can stand it." The assumption being that the hot water will help kill any germs present. While it is true that hot water can kill germs and bacteria, the temperature necessary for this to occur is generally a lot hotter than a naked human hand can withstand without being burned.

In other words, washing your hands in cold water is as effective as hot water (for everyday purposes) and also has the benefit of saving energy. You don't run the risk of scalding yourself, you save energy (utilities cost) and you do a fairly equivalent job of stopping the spread of germs and bacteria (disease prevention). What's not to love?

Use cold water to wash your hands and your clothes!
