Adjust Your Ceiling Fan Seasonally To Save Energy & Help Lower Utility Bills

If you have a ceiling fan/s in your home, remember to adjust its rotating direction on a seasonal basis to help conserve energy and heat/cool your home more efficiently.

In the Summer
When using a ceiling fan during the warmer months, verify that it's rotating counter-clockwise or forward. A ceiling fan operating normally is designed to produce a Wind Chill effect by introducing a downward airflow, like a cool breeze. This helps the air temperature cool (without the need to crank up your air conditioner).

In the Winter
As temperatures get colder outdoors, adjust your ceiling fan so that it rotates clockwise or reverse. [Most ceiling fans have a simple switch that you flip to change the direction of rotation.] Warm air rises and gets trapped near the ceiling. A ceiling fan in reverse mode (rotating clockwise) will circulate the warm air from the ceiling down to the floor. This helps to take the chill out of the air and keep your home warm (without the need to boost your thermostat).

NOTE: If you "flipped the switch" on your ceiling fan in the Winter, remember to flip it back (to the forward setting) come Summer. Flip the switch on your ceiling fan with each Winter/Summer season change for optimal efficiency.
