The United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) redeems mutilated currency as a free public service. Lawful holders of mutilated currency may receive a full value redemption (upon verification). The most common causes of currency mutilation are fire, water, chemicals, and deterioration by burying, etc....

You must submit a claim, including sending in the actual mutilated currency, in order to receive possible restitution.
