Tools For Food Allergy Sufferers [Sensors + Apps]

Tech Tools To Help Prevent Allergic Reactions If you suffer from food allergies or shop for anyone who does, you know that it can often be difficult to find "safe" products at the grocery store . Try the Spoon Guru App . Simply scan foods labels and the app will alert you of any concerns based upon your (or your family member's) preset profile. (User must register for an account and create a profile, select allergens of concern and save.) Free. iOS and Android. Do you or does someone you know suffer from a peanut allergy ? A new consumer product called the Nima Peanut Sensor 1 (a handheld device + associated mobile app) might be of help. "Nima is recognized as a leader in allergen research and has been awarded a grant from the National Institute of Health to develop the peanut sensor." This is technology moving the needle in the right direction, a potentially life-saving one. Remember to read the small print at the product website. What about gluten ?

Library of the Future: Public & Free

It's time to take another look at your local public library. These days your public library card can give you access to all sorts of interesting perks, and a number of these add-ons are digital offerings so you don't need to leave home (visit the physical library) to take advantage of them.

Virtual Library Services Offered Via Library Partnerships
  • Hoopla Digital -- Instantly borrow eBooks, audiobooks, comics, movies, music, and more, 24/7 with your library card.
  • Kanopy -- Stream the best thoughtful entertainment free, brought to you by your library.
  • Virtual magazine & newspaper subscriptions via services like Zinio.
  • And of course digital or e-book loans, often available in a choice of formats like Kindle, Nook, Mobi or plain PDF, allowing you to pick what works for you (your devices).
Check with your local public library to verify with which services it has a partnership (often this data can be found on the library's website). Plus, a benefit of virtual checkouts is not having to worry about late-fees or late-returns as the virtual download usually auto-deletes upon expiration of the loan period.

Extracurricular Library Services & Features (May Require a Visit to the Actual Building)
Some libraries allow you to checkout such nifty things as American Girl® Dolls, Musical Instruments and Free Zoo & Museum Passes --- see what extras are available in your local area.

It goes without saying that many of the resources mentioned can be used for homeschooling or simply for personal edification and/or entertainment. This biggest win of all is that these services are all free with your public library card! (Paid for with our tax dollars and donations.) If you haven't checked out your local public library lately, you might want to dust off that library card or sign up for a new one!
