Tech Tools To Help Prevent Allergic Reactions If you suffer from food allergies or shop for anyone who does, you know that it can often be difficult to find "safe" products at the grocery store . Try the Spoon Guru App . Simply scan foods labels and the app will alert you of any concerns based upon your (or your family member's) preset profile. (User must register for an account and create a profile, select allergens of concern and save.) Free. iOS and Android. Do you or does someone you know suffer from a peanut allergy ? A new consumer product called the Nima Peanut Sensor 1 (a handheld device + associated mobile app) might be of help. "Nima is recognized as a leader in allergen research and has been awarded a grant from the National Institute of Health to develop the peanut sensor." This is technology moving the needle in the right direction, a potentially life-saving one. Remember to read the small print at the product website. What about gluten ?

Get A Garment Steamer!

Does anyone like to iron? Crickets.

Time to ditch your iron and replace it with a garment steamer, which does virtually the same thing (removes wrinkles), but with a lot less fuss. Plus, it can also "freshen" fabrics. Garment Steamers are also usually safer to operate. Yes, one can burn himself with a garment steamer, but burns received from a hot metal iron tend to be worse by degrees.

The price point on (portable) garment steamers is within the same range as an iron. And if you find a good sale, then a bigger unit becomes quite affordable. Operating a garment steamer (wafting steam pouring from the unit over hanging clothes, curtains or other fabrics) takes a lot less effort than pushing a hot iron across your clothes and there's less likelihood you'll ruin the fabric. An iron set too high will literally burn a hole in something. (As in cooking, steaming is a far gentler action than searing. You may actually be able to extend the life of your clothing by maintaining it with steam, instead of searing heat.)
Handheld garment steamers often look similar to irons.
Besides, have you ever tried to iron a curtain still attached to the wall? A garment steamer allows you to steam hanging fabrics. Have kids? It's also a great time-saving tool for prepping school uniforms... or work uniforms, business suits, curtains and table cloths ---basically any fabric. A good tool to have for people who sew! It's quicker than ironing and you can hang more than one piece of clothing side by side and steam a rack of things in one session.

You can save time, you're less likely to ruin clothes and less likely to injure yourself while operating a garment steamer. What's not to love?

NOTE: Research to determine what unit is best for your needs. A few things to consider: Are you a single user? Do you have kids whose school clothes will need care? Do you travel for business and need nicely "pressed" garments on your trips? Does your home have curtains?

  1. What's in my home? I recently purchased a SALAV Black 1500 Watt Performance Series Garment Steamer Model # GS06-DJ-Black. Usually sells for ~$65.00, but I caught it on sale for roughly $40.00. By the time I redeemed rewards points and other promotions, I got it for FREE ---with FREE SHIPPING to my house. That's a win any day of the week!
